Second Day at Tanjong Karang...

The second day at Tg Karang is beginning brightly. We were shown how the locals there produced the trademark Tg Karang pineapple biscuits at the nearby SME (Small Medium Enterprise) producing plant.

The aunty uses the mixed pineapple flour batter to make an oval shaped object.

After molding it into nice, cute oval shaped flour, it is then stuffed with pineapple jam. A piece of walnut, or any kind of nut is stuffed together with the jam.

Other than pineapple biscuits, they also produce various soft biscuits such as these:

Strawberry biscuits, mixed flavours biscuits, and my favourite...

Chocolate pineapple biscuits and strawberry pineapple biscuits. One cannot miss this opportunity to taste and savour the mouth-watering biscuits of Tg Karang.

Next, they have the crunchy, yummy, and tasty ubi kayu chips.

Firstly, the tapioca needs to be removed from it's bark.

Then, it needs to be cut into pieces by the fillet machine.

One needs to push the ubi kayu to the machine to feed it. But,be careful not to insert your fingers!

And then fry it...then...

...poof! you got yourself bags of chips! This is a must try delicacy for any traveler to Tg Karang.

And...

After a long day tour, we finally get to sit and rest to be ready for the night's climax show!

The Killer...

Well, before we go to the climax, we have to eat first. So, in this suspense, we get to chow down the famous Javanese traditional jaw breaker, knockout puncher, eye watering, and skull bashing Nasi Ambeng.

Yummy!

This awesome food consists of 4 main components; the rice, fried noodles, one whole chicken divided into two, and the nutted chips. The rest of the elements such as the chicken flakes, vegetables, and chili, can be replaced by either a serving of fried catfish, tomato sauce, or prawns.

After all the stomach killers, we go to our final tour of Tg Karang. Which is to be continued to the next page.

The Night Beckons...

This is where the show was set. In front one of our ''homestay daddy'' car porch. It's not shown here because the performers were there preparing their incense and cannot be snapped for spiritual reasons.

As it is spiritual,  this Kuda Kepang show has been a norm for the local Javanese culture. They regularly perform this spiritual trance performance to keep their spiritual bond with nature in harmony, in balance and peace.

After their preparations, I received permission to snap photos of the performance. It all started with a slash of the whip to the air, and the performers; with their wooden man-made horse, dance with passion and vitality as the spirit leads.

As the night wears on, the dancers constantly gather together in one accord, then break away dancing furiously.

After quite a while dancing, they begin to let go of the horses and just follow the flow of the spirits; and the numbness just struck from snapping anymore photos. It's quite an exotic experience with a mixture of fear and amazement. Mind you, this is a dance which invites the natural spirit of the animals into your body. For an untrained spectator to be filled by one of these beings is a no-no. But, on the upside is, the whole experience of it all gives us an insight on how the Javanese in Tg Karang can relate themselves with the animal spirits.

Upon Arrival at Tanjong Karang...

Although it was hot, we were brought to a hall with minimal cooling solutions. The aircond did not work, so we have to sweat it all out before any activities were even started.

Moving on...

These are the steps on cut the bamboo sticks to make the kite chasis. This is one of the activities of the Tg Karang homestay package.

We look in awe as the kite maker makes kite with just minimal tool. The uniqueness of Tg Karang kites is a must see and feel experience for any traveler to Tg Karang.
